KUALA LUMPUR: Amid the raised voices and jeers traded in Parliament on Monday (July 26), lawmakers showed that they had not lost their sense of humour and forgotten how to laugh at themselves.

       Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu eased the tension in the august House for a little when he stopped his speech to fix his face mask.

       The Kota Raja MP had removed his face mask to speak but Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) reminded him to put it back on.

       Thinking that the reminder came from Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Mohamad, who is known for his lively speeches, said "I will oblige your every rule, Datuk, as long as you give me more time."

       His comment drew laughter from the floor but Azalina, who casually addressed him as "Abang Mat", said it was not her who said it but Mas Ermieyati, the Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister.

       Mohamad wore his mask throughout the rest of his speech.

       Another incident was when Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had a slip of the tongue and said "Lembah Pantai" instead of "Lembah Klang (Klang Valley)" when explaining Greater Klang Valley Taskforce measures to manage the spread of Covid-19.

       Tengku Zafrul's slip caught the ear of Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil (PKR) who gave Tengku Zafrul an odd look.

       "Lain macam saja (That sounds funny)," Fahmi responded.

       Realising his gaffe, Tengku Zafrul laughed off the mistake and apologised to Fahmi, who accepted it.

       Talk is rife that Tengku Zafrul is Perikatan Nasional’s candidate in Lembah Pantai although the 48-year-old Senator is not a member of any political party.

       The five days of special sittings will continue until Thursday (July 29) and resume on Monday (Aug 2).
