TOKYO -- Typhoon Mindulle remains on course to approach Japan, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is warning people to be vigilant against high waves and strong winds in the coming days, while citing the possibility of heavy rain triggering landslides and flooding.

The typhoon, currently classed as large and very strong, is expected to bring rough seas to the Nansei Islands, the Ogasawara Islands and the Pacific coast of areas from western through to northern Japan between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2. Particularly rough weather is expected in the Izu Islands vicinity around Oct. 1 as the typhoon approaches the area.

As of midday on Sept. 28, Mindulle, the year's 16th typhoon, was located southeast of Okinawa, and slowly moving north-northwest. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 935 hectopascals, with a maximum wind speed near its center of 50 meters per second (180 kilometers per hour). Gusts were reaching up to 70 m/s (252 kph), while winds of up to 25 m/s (90 kph) were recorded within 185 kilometers of the typhoon's center.

After approaching the Izu Islands, the typhoon was expected to remain east of Japan and head northeast, the agency said.

The JMA predicted waves of 6-8 meters near the Okinawa region and other affected areas including the Amami, Ogasawara and Izu Islands as well as around the Shikoku, Kinki and Tokai regions in western and central Japan between Sept. 28 and 30. It said heavy rain could fall on the Pacific coasts of eastern and northern Japan around Oct. 1, and warned people to be on their guard for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and high river levels or river flooding.
