PETALING JAYA: Achieving 100% stabilisation of the tiger population by 2025 and 40% household waste recycling rate the same year, as well as a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions are among the targets set in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

Green growth drivers such as enhancing management and protection of natural resources, embracing the circular economy, moving towards becoming a low-carbon nation, and increasing climate change resilience are prioritised in the 12MP.

The country's five-year development roadmap from 2021 to 2025 seeks to advance green growth by implementing the clean, green and resilient development agenda through the whole-of-nation approach.

"As Malaysia commits to conserve planetary health and aspires to become a carbon-neutral nation in the long term, priority will be given to low-carbon and climate-resilient socioeconomic development as well as conservation of natural resources and ecosystems," according to the plan, which was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in Parliament on Monday (Sept 27).

Strategies to be implemented included accelerating transition to the circular economy, promoting green and resilient cities and townships, enhancing green mobility, augmenting low-carbon energy and extending producer's responsibility as well as adopting evidence-based and risk-informed actions to increase resilience against climate change and disasters.

Emphasis will also be placed on efforts to safeguard natural capital, ensure sustainable utilisation of natural resources and benefit sharing, strengthening environmental governance, scaling up financing and instilling a sense of shared responsibility.

Among the selected targets in Malaysia's move to implement low-carbon, clean and resilient development are having up to 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 measurements by 2030.

Malaysia has also set a 2025 target for a 40% rate of household waste recycling, a 67% reduction of hydrochlorofluorocarbon consumption and 25% government green procurement.

To manage natural resources efficiently, the selected targets included having 100% of the tiger population stabilised by 2025 and at least 10% of coastal and marine areas conserved through gazettement or other conservation measures.

Malaysia also aims to have at least 20% of terrestrial and inland water areas conserved through gazettement or other conservation measures by 2025, as well as implementation of 10 Integrated River Basin Management plans by then.

Towards strengthening an enabling environment for effective governance, the 12MP aims to introduce the policy in disaster risk management efforts by 2025.
