Queen 'pulled it out the bag' to help royal bagpiper when wife was dying

According to Tatler, whilst at Balmoral the Queen has a bagpiper play for 15 minutes under her window every morning at 9am. Pipe Major Scott Methven, holds the position of Piper to the Sovereign currently.

The tradition was started by Queen Victoria, whose husband purchased the rural Highland estate.

Scott Methven told the BBC: “At nine o'clock every morning, you would play the pipes.”

“So you’ll do seven minutes and then you’ll tune your drones for a wee minute and then another seven minutes.

“On my first day I was told I would be an Honorary Page of the Presence, which I had no idea, coming from a council house, what that would involve, but it sounded quite serious.”

The Pipe Major said the Royal Family looked after his children whilst he went home to care for his wife who was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal cancer.

Despite a diagnosis of a few weeks, she survived a year.

He spoke to the BBC about his children: “They were staying in Balmoral Castle and getting looked while I was away looking after my wife.”

The family were then invited to spend time at Windsor by the Queen during his wife’s last few months.

He said: “I went back to work and we came down and stayed at Windsor Castle.”

“Her Majesty gave permission to come and stay there and you know, that’s memories.

“And you know, people genuinely think what you will about the Royal Family or the Queen, they pulled it out the bag for me.”

Scott was the piper for four years from 2015 to 2019.
