PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has lodged a police report over a letter purportedly written by Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun stating that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has lost majority support in Parliament to continue as prime minister.

       The letter, purportedly written by Azhar to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, has been circulating on social media since Wednesday (Aug 11) night and states that Muhyiddin only had the support of 100 MPs.

       The Speaker has yet to respond to questions from The Star on the matter.

       Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki did not reveal where the police report was lodged, but said the issue was based on Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution that deals with a prime minister's legitimacy.

       Asyraf also said Azhar must clarify if the letter is authentic.

       "A prime minister's legitimacy is a very serious issue because it has implications on every government administrative matter and affair – and this includes the status of new government policies,” he said at a press conference.

       Asyraf also said it was peculiar how on Wednesday (Aug 11), Azhar was quick to only deny widely-circulated reports claiming Muhyiddin wanted to dissolve Parliament.

       Asyraf also said that should Muhyiddin resign, then the King can appoint a new prime minister under Article 40(2)(b) of the Federal Constitution.

       "We will leave it to the King to appoint a prime minister to solve the current issues we are facing.

       "Once we reach herd immunity, like it or not, we have to return the mandate back to the people," he said.

       He added that a new government must be determined by the people through the ballot box, which would also ensure the confidence of foreign investors.

       "Otherwise, there will not be political stability and no investors want to invest in a country where the government is shaky," he added.

       On Wednesday, sources told The Star that in a pre-Cabinet audience, the King had asked Muhyiddin to test his parliamentary majority through a motion of confidence in a special Parliament sitting that must be held no later than September.

       It is believed that Muhyiddin has decided to stick to the Sept 7 date for the confidence motion to be tabled in Parliament.
