As Daniel Lobo of Waukegan looked forward to graduation in May with a master’s degree in biology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and then more schooling to become a chiropractor, his first goal was helping his family.
“He wanted to take his mother out of work,” Rene F. Lobo, Daniel’s father, said. “He didn’t want his mother to have to work anymore. He was going to do it. He wanted to take on the world. He had so many dreams to achieve.”
Those dreams will not be realized because Daniel Lobo was the victim of a road-rage incident shortly after midnight Saturday in Gurnee, according to police. He was the shot while sitting in the passenger seat of a friend’s car.
Funeral services are scheduled for Lobo, 22, at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nuestra Se?ora de Guadalupe Church in Waukegan, with burial following at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville. Visitation takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.
Leslie Mondragon, a funeral director at the Memorial Chapel in Waukegan who helped arrange the visitation, funeral and burial, said Lobo had another dream when it came to his mother, who along with Rene Lobo, worked hard to send their son to college.

“He promised to buy his mother a house because she and his father worked so hard to put him through college,” Mondragon said. “He was devoted to her. He was very responsible.”
Assisting people in addition to his mother was another goal for Lobo. It was why he decided to become a chiropractor.
“He loved to help people,” his father said. “Everyone loved him.”
Whenever Lobo decided to do something, his father said he was a perfectionist. Just over a month ago, he wanted to learn to play the guitar. His mother, Elisabeth Gonzales, gave him one of hers to take to Carbondale with him.
“I heard him playing, and I couldn’t believe it,” Lobo said. “He was singing too. He was playing Pink Floyd. With everything he did, he wanted to be the best. Everything had to be perfect.”

Lobo was born on May 30, 1999 in Waukegan. He started playing baseball when he was 6, and his father said it became a lifelong passion. He was a member of the Waukegan High School team his four years there, and was planning to join a semipro squad this spring in Carbondale.
A shortstop and second baseman, his father said he was playing on a travel team from the time he was 10. His family followed his games from state to state each summer. When he came home from college, he always had time for friends and family.
“He had time for everyone,” his father said. “He made you love him because he was such a sweet kid. He loved to be with his friends and with his family. ”
When he was home, he spent time with family, but found the opportunity to be with his friends. Baseball, basketball and pool were some of his favorite activities with his buddies.
The sole passenger riding in a car with a friend Saturday, Lobo was shot by the occupant of a vehicle behind the one in which Lobo was traveling, authorities said.

The driver of the vehicle in which Lobo was traveling was driving recklessly, according to a police report. It began slowing down near the intersection of Waveland and Grandview avenues in Gurnee. The gunman shot when the car slowed.
After the shooting, Lobo’s friend drove him to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he died.
“He was home for the Thanksgiving holiday,” Mondragon said. “No matter how far away he was, he always came home to visit.”
Beside his parents, Lobo is survived by siblings Itzel Lobo and Rene Lobo. He is also survived by his grandparents, Aris and Gaspar Gonzalez, as well as Mari Ortiz. Aunts and uncles Leonardo, Felix, Hector, Marissa, Marian, Ana and Rosa also survive him, as well as many cousins, according to the obituary.
