Kate Middleton was 'terrified' of Christmas with Royal Family: 'Many things can go wrong'

For the second year running, the Queen has cancelled plans to host Christmas at Sandringham amid a spike in coronavirus cases across the UK. Buckingham Palace confirmed on Tuesday that Her Majesty will remain at Windsor Castle, where she will celebrate her first festive period since the passing of her husband, Prince Philip. However, members of the Firm will still reportedly visit the monarch.

The Royal Family had celebrated the festive season at the Norfolk estate each year since the Eighties, until coronavirus struck.

Christmas at Sandringham has been an important part of the royal calendar and the Queen usually stays at the estate until February 6, which is the anniversary of her father’s death.

However, the royal protocol involved during a Christmas with the Royal Family “terrified” Kate in her younger days, according to Ms Seward.

The royal biographer, who is editor in chief of Majesty Magazine, was speaking on Channel 5 documentary ‘Sandringham: The Queen at Christmas’ which first aired in 2018.

Ms Seward said: “It’s very difficult for an outsider ? Kate was terrified!

“It’s not that they’re not friendly and sweet, it’s just that there are so many things that can go wrong”.

The documentary also explored the staggering number of outfit changes required over the three-day festive break.

The Royal Family’s Christmas Eve party is black-tie, but the Firm must also pack separate outfits for their church visit on Christmas Day and for a Boxing Day shoot.

Royal Author Claudia Joseph said: “Kate, when she first married William, confided how nervous she was, having to be constantly changing for every occasion.”

Other royals who have reportedly struggled with the demands of a Sandringham Christmas include Princess Diana.

The Royal Family, who normally meet and exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, have a tradition of buying one another joke presents.

However, the Princess of Wales seemingly failed to get the memo during her first Christmas with the Firm in 1981.

That year, Diana reportedly bought her new sister-in-law Princess Anne a cashmere jumper.

Meanwhile, the Princess Royal had gifted Diana a toilet roll holder in return.

However, Kate seems to have taken to the royal tradition very well, having one year savagely bought Prince Harry a ‘grow your own girlfriend’ kit.

Harry, who was once considered the joker of the Firm, once boldly gifted a shower cap to the Queen which bore the slogan ‘Ain’t Life a B****’.

By 1982, Diana also seemed to have gotten into the spirit of things, after she bought Sarah Ferguson a leopard-print bath mat.

This year, the royals will not meet at Sandringham due to the surge in Omicron coronavirus cases, however members of the Royal Family have reportedly promised to spend Christmas with the Queen one way or another.

Staff are also said to be prepared to work in a quasi-bubble to ensure the 95-year-old monarch is kept safe.

According to the Telegraph, there will be rigorous testing in place, with those expected to be involved in Christmas plans at Windsor being mindful of their exposure to the virus.

A source told the paper: “The decision [to cancel Christmas at Sandringham] was a personal one after careful consideration and reflects a precautionary decision.

“There will be family visiting Windsor over the Christmas period and all appropriate guidelines will be followed.”
