A TikTok plastic surgeon has had her medical licence revoked after livestreaming a botched liposuction procedure.

Dr Katharine Roxanne Grawe, who established her practice just outside of Columbus, Ohio, permanently lost her right to practise medicine on Wednesday following a definitive ruling from the state medical board.

The woman was initially struck off in November 2022 when it emerged that one of her patients had faced severe complications following a liposuction procedure that was livestreamed on Dr Grawe's TikTok channel.

The board stated that Dr Grawe was evidently distracted during the surgery as she looked at and spoke to the camera while performing the operation.

Her patient was sent to the emergency room, where she experienced an episode of hepatic encephalopathy, resulting in the loss of brain function when a damaged liver struggles to remove toxins from the bloodstream. She also suffered from perforated bowels and a serious bacterial infection.

The disgraced surgeon amassed thousands of followers on TikTok, propelling her to internet fame and attracting the attention of many potential customers.

She claims she always obtained permission before sharing footage from the operations, but the state medical board stated it was inappropriate for her to share the footage.

Dr Grawe was already known to the state medical board, which had previously issued a warning encouraging her to reconsider her behaviour.

In September 2021, she was asked to undertake remedial education courses related to plastic surgery complications, professionalism, and ethics.

However, this had little effect on the aspiring TikTok star, who continued to livestream her procedures.

In an attempt to dissuade the board from permanently revoking her licence, the woman said: "I ask you from the bottom of my heart to please consider my thoughts with an open mind."

"This experience has humbled me more than you can know. I am willing to change my social media practices, and I will never livestream a surgery again."

A medical board member said: "We've seen an extreme lack of professionalism. Her posts were done as a marketing ploy. In the video (referring to the livestream of the surgery for the patient mentioned in the case), you can see her looking at the camera and not paying attention to the patient."

While her TikTok channel has now gone private, the woman is still active on Instagram, where she has over 100,000 followers.
