SEREMBAN: A 36-year-old tailor from Bandar Seri Jempol has been duped of RM105,000 in a love scam by a man she only knew on Facebook.

State Commercial Crimes Investigations Department chief Supt Aibee Ab Ghani said the victim, who is married, met the man who claimed to be an Indonesian, towards the end of 2018.

“The man, who went by the name KA Agus and claimed to live in Palembang, later professed his love for the victim.

“When she fell for him, he started pouring out his problems to her.

“He then asked if she could loan him some cash,” he said.

Supt AIbee said the suspect also promised to repay the victim after selling off his land.

The victim eventually agreed to help the man.

She later transferred the cash in stages into 19 different bank accounts in Indonesia.

The first transfer, involving some RM30,000, was made in Aug 2019.

The man also told the victim that the bank accounts belonged to his family members and friends.

“The victim initially gave the man her savings.

“And when he asked her for more, she started borrowing from family members and friends.

“The victim’s husband eventually came to know about the matter when he realised that their savings had suddenly gone missing,” he said.

He said the victim then tried to contact the suspect but was unsuccessful.

The case is being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Offenders can be jailed between one to 10 years, whipped and fined, upon conviction.
