KUALA LUMPUR: Days after a maskless Caucasian shopper caused a stir at Suria KLCC, the police have confirmed that she is the one captured in another video trying to enter a shopping mall in Bangsar here without wearing a mask.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said the police had identified the woman and opened an investigation into the case.

“We will call her in for questioning soon,” he said.

ACP Amihizam said this came after the police detected a 20-second video clip circulating on Twitter titled “Spotted the Karen making another scene at BSC! #KARENDIOR #KARENKLCC”.

“The video clip shows a 51-year-old female foreigner who was detained by a security guard at the shopping mall in Bangsar for not wearing a mask and attempting to enter the place.

“The video shows a breach of standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the National Security Council,” he said yesterday.

He confirmed that she is the same person who had caused a scene when she was barred from stepping into a luxury retail store at Suria KLCC recently.

“We advise against making any speculation on the video that could lead to public anxiety,” ACP Amihizam said, urging witnesses to go to the nearest police station to have their statements recorded.

They can also contact the Brickfields police hotline at 03-2297 9222 or the City police hotline at 03-2115 9999.

The incident at Suria KLCC was captured in a short clip by Twitter user @DFEfiercefun.

Part of his comment said: “No entry for no mask!!! The lady resisted and said those with masks are communists!!”

In the video, a maskless Caucasian woman is seen complaining to the shopping centre staff that the boutique worker had put his hands on her to prevent her from entering, which was denied by the employee concerned.

It immediately went viral with “Karen” – the generic name used for self-entitled white women – being a top trending topic on social media on Wednesday.

The tweet sparked an uproar among social media users who chided the woman for not observing the SOP in public while they praised the staff for standing their ground.
