The Greater Manchester Mayor sarcastically mocked dressage when he referenced a tweet he made on Sunday which said that skateboarding shouldn’t be an Olympic sport. His outburst came after Charlotte Dujardin became the most decorated UK woman athlete at an Olympics when she took home a sixth medal today.

The 36-year-old claimed bronze in the individual dressage aboard Gio at the Tokyo Games.

This was lost on the outspoken mayor who posted: “Just watching the dressage.

“I take back everything I’ve said about skateboarding.”

The tweet came after he shared his equally scathing views on skateboarding - which was included in the Olympics for the first time this year.

He tweeted: “Not at all sure about skateboarding as an Olympic sport.”

When questioned about why, he replied: “I don’t know. Doesn’t seem to require the same commitment as the other disciplines. Could be wrong.”

After facing a huge backlash the former Labour leadership contender revealed he was “going to learn a bit more about the sport”.

His comments were quickly slammed by many - who rightly pointed out that dressage athletes spend years dedicating themselves to the sport.

Another raged: "Wait til you see the diving, Andy. It's just people jumping into the water. What's all that about?

"And how about the 100m, eh? It's just people running for 10 seconds. How is that a sport!"

When another user said that riding horses was a pastime exclusively for the wealthy, she hit back, writing: "What, you've never known a single person who has ever been on a horse?

"Feels a bit churlish to diss it when one of the GB riders is the most decorated female athlete following the bronze medal she won today."

However the prominent Labour politician was not without his supporters.

One wrote: "Dressage at an Olympics in the 21st century - if only the horses won the medals and could opt out of having the issue of a human's mass on their spines while taking part."
