KOTA KINABALU: Traders have been reminded not to hike prices or short-change consumers during the Chinese New Year festive season.

Sabah West Coast Smart Consumers Association president David Chan said those who raise the price of controlled goods above the maximum set by the government could face legal action.

“Ahead of the festive season, traders should not increase the prices of essential goods at will or take advantage (of consumers) in Sabah.

"They also need to put price tags on all items being sold for the convenience of consumers," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 21).

The association will not hesitate to report any trader found engaging in unethical business practices, he added.

Chan said price tags or signs for both controlled and regular items should be clear and prominent.

He also reminded night market traders to maintain cleanliness in food handling and packaging as well as practise food waste management.

He urged them to maintain the quality of food and cleanliness of their premises at all times, including festive seasons.

As for consumers, he said they should be vigilant when buying prepared food to avoid incidents of food poisoning.

He said complaints on any suspected offences by traders can be made to the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry in Sabah via telephone at 088-484368 (Kota Kinabalu office), by WhatsaApp to 019-2794317 (Consumer Complaints division) or by email to e-aduan@kpdnhep.gov.my.
