Snow excitement builds as winter approaches and El Ni?o sets the stage for what could be a memorable one.

Through 11 p.m. Nov. 22, you can enter your forecast for how much snow you expect from Dec. 1 to the final accumulation at National, to the nearest 10th of an inch. If any snow falls before Dec. 1, it will not count toward the contest total.

There is no tangible prize for this competition, but the winner (s) will be showered with admiration and attention here at the Capital Weather Gang in the spring.

For the winter of 2022-2023, nearly 1,000 people participated. No one accurately predicted the near-record lowest 0.4 inches that ended up falling. Three folks were within 0.1 inches. Another seven predicted less than an inch.

Some additional background may help you with your snowfall forecast:
National Airport’s 30-year snowfall (1991 to 2020) average is 13.7 inches for the entire season. On average, 0.1 inch falls in November, 1.7 inches in December, 4.9 inches in January, 5 inches in February, and 2 inches in March. Median snowfall for the most recent 30 winters is 10.1 inches. The long-term average, back to 1888-1889, is 17.9 inches. One hundred years ago, the average was close to 24 inches per winter.
