PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has successfully undergone an elective medical procedure, says the National Heart Institute (IJN).
IJN said in a brief statement that Dr Mahathir underwent the procedure there on Saturday (Jan 8) and is expected to be discharged within the next few days based on his clinical progress.
“A team of doctors from IJN and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre carried out the procedure (which) was uneventful and went as planned.
“Dr Mahathir is currently recuperating well. He is fully awake and in high spirits,” the statement issued on Sunday (Jan 9) read.
Due to the institutional SOPs. no visitors are allowed to visit the former premier in IJN.
“Dr Mahathir and Tun Siti Hasmah Ali would like to express their gratitude for all the good wishes and concern from the public,” the statement read.
Dr Mahathir, 96, who is also Parti Pejuang Tanah Air chairman, was admitted to IJN for a full check-up on Dec 16.
He was discharged on Dec 23 after undergoing a series of medical investigations.
He was admitted to IJN on Friday (Jan 7) for the elective procedure.
