GEORGE TOWN: While the Macau scam is continuously in the news, police have warned the public against a new scam when buying durians online.
The new scam, which goes with an app called “D4 Durian”, would draw victims with the offer of cheap prices on Facebook, and who would then be directed to a link to download the app for payment.
George Town district police, in a Facebook post, said upon clicking the link, a page that resembles an “FPX transaction” page would appear and once the victim entered his username and password, the system would hang.
A message later from the bank would say that money had been transferred.
“The transfer to the third-party account will usually be an amount larger than the intended purchase,” it said.
The police reminded the public to be aware of the scam, which has surfaced during the durian season.“Don’t download if you come across the app and don’t reveal your username and password to third parties.
“Beware of this latest scam to avoid being the next victim,” it added.
