KOTA KINABALU: Manual registration of voters aged 18 and above could weed out phantom voters, says SAPP deputy president Datuk Richard Yong We Kong.

He said while SAPP had no objection against Undi18, the party felt that automatic registration was not viable.

He claimed this was because there were phantom voters in the Sabah electoral roll and the existence of dubious identity cards, he said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 6).

"We support having youth take part in the democratic system but we don't want any possibility of abuse of the democratic process," Yong added.

He said that the automatic registration of 18-year-olds was not for Sabah until the issues of phantom voters, dubious ICs and illegal immigrants had been resolved.

"We want the Election Commission to provide briefings for political parties on Undi18 implementation plans and how they will conduct registration of new voters before they start," he added.
