Respected royal biographer Robert Lacey said a "homesick" Duke of Sussex has been "mournfully" calling friends in the UK in recent weeks after facing a backlash over his comments about Prince Charles. Mr Lacey, the author of Battle of Brothers, added that Harry has been telling them he would like to make up with the royals.
Writing in the Daily Mail, the royal expert said: "'Homesick Harry' has been calling UK pals mournfully in recent weeks, since his public complaints against Prince Charles were so poorly received."
Mr Lacey said the friends "have been trying to point out to him the risk he is running with his stream of hurtful, personal complaints".
He added: "I'm told that Harry has been telling friends he would like to reconcile, and is willing to admit some of the missteps he has made."
It comes as Harry is back in Britain ahead of the unveiling of a Princess Diana statue at Kensington Palace on Thursday.
Much attention has been focussed on once-close brothers Harry and Prince William, who are at the centre of an ongoing rift, ahead of the event.
Last month, Harry accused the royals of "total neglect" in his Apple TV documentary series, The Me You Can't See.
He also lashed out at his father Charles's parenting in the series and during an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast.
Harry's attacks came in the wake of his and Meghan Markle's controversial Oprah Winfrey interview, which saw them make a set of explosive claims about the royals.

Carole Middleton has "immense" influence on Prince William and Kate, according to a royal expert.
Royal author Phil Dampier told The Sun: “Carole is a very strong woman who comes from quite a humble background, and the fact that she has worked herself up with a successful business has given her a backbone of steel.
“Kate turns to her for advice and comfort all the time and she spends a lot of time with William and Kate’s three children.
“Carole will be a stabilising and supportive force in the background, looking after the kids when needs be but also just being there for them.
"Carole is very much a power behind the throne and her influence is immense."
10.35am update: Queen 'would not regard the family as complete' without Harry's presence at key event
The Queen will want Prince Harry to take part in the celebrations for her historic milestone, a royal author said.
The monarch will want the Duke of Sussex to join the rest of the Firm on the Buckingham Palace balcony next year amid the celebrations for her Platinum Jubilee, according to royal historian Robert Lacey.
He told Hello! magazine: "The fact that Harry and his grandmother have been able to talk to each other so directly through the last year has been a saving grace of the situation.
"The Queen has always expressed personal sympathy and understanding and I'm sure she'd want Harry on the balcony. She would not regard the family as complete without that."
10.10am update: 'New disaster erupting' at Harry and William's 'highwire meeting'
The Queen could be facing a fresh crisis as a royal expert has warned there may be a "new disaster" for the monarchy to deal with after Prince Harry and William's "highwire meeting".
Royal expert Daniela Elser wrote in Australia's Daily Telegraph: "With the countdown on for the two princes reuniting at the palace, there are already warning signs of a new disaster erupting.
"This will be the most highwire meeting of the two men so far.
"What should have been a powerful and touching gesture from the Wales brothers, the project, conceived to honour their mother when the bond between the two men was still largely intact, has now become a powder keg moment in the long and winding clash between the Sussexes and the wider Royal Family."

The Duchess of Cambridge was expected to be attending the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue this week - but royal aides were reportedly "agonising" over how her presence would make Prince Harry feel.
Royal commentator Camilla Tominey wrote in the Telegraph: “Aides had agonised over whether Kate, 39, should attend Thursday’s engagement but she will not be present.
“While William, 39, always wanted his wife of 10 years to be by his side, there were concerns that Harry might feel ‘outflanked’ by the Cambridges if they were there together and he was on his own.”
