Sabah DID directed to ensure monsoon drains clogged-free ahead of expected downpour

KOTA KINABALU: The state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has been directed to ensure that all monsoon drains in Sabah’s east coast are clogged-free and capable of efficiently channelling rainwater away from towns.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said this is in preparation for the heavier than usual rain forecast by the Department of Meteorology.

“Almost always, rainwater could not escape urban areas quickly enough because of clogged drains.

“It could be due to various factors, the most common of which is that the drains were poorly constructed, and drains in Sabah have always fallen victim to indiscriminate garbage dumping.

“But now is not the time to point fingers; what is more important is that we be prepared for the worst,” he said.

Kitingan, who is also the state Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, advised those living in low-lying areas to be vigilant and learn what had happened in Peninsular Malaysia.

“If possible, make plans now to relocate to a higher ground, especially if you live in a flood-prone area. Remember that while properties may be replaced, lives are not,” he said in a statement.
