KUCHING: Police have detained two teenagers after a newborn baby was found wrapped in a towel in a motorcycle basket at Kampung Siol Kandis here Thursday (Aug 26).
Kuching OCPD Asst Comm Ahsmon Bajah said police received a call at about 5.30am from a villager who discovered the baby girl.
He said a 16-year-old girl and her boyfriend, also aged 16, were picked up about four hours after the call.
"During initial investigations, the pair admitted that they left the baby there after her birth at about 2am on Thursday," he said in a statement.
Police also seized a motorcycle, mobile phone and a towel.
ACP Ahsmon said the girl and baby had been sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for a medical check-up.
He said the boy was being held at the Kuching police headquarters lock-up to assist investigations.
The case has been classified under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a baby.
