CHILLING screams were heard coming from the home of a five-year-old boy before he was discovered dead in a river.

Logan Mwangi's mum yelled "the back door was open" as he was reported missing on Saturday morning in Bridgend, South Wales.

He was discovered in the nearby Ogmore River shortly after with three people including a 13-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of murder.

Horrified neighbours reported hearing screams coming from the home Logan shared with mum Angharad Williamson and her fiance Jay Cole.

One said she had spoken to police about a row outside the home.

She added: “I heard a row going off outside the house and what I thought was strange was I could hear a child’s voice.

“A bit later I could hear the mother screaming outside the house. She was on the phone to police.

”All of this kicked off at around 5.30 in the morning and I couldn’t get back to sleep.”

Another added: "I could hear the mum screaming for her son. She was shouting 'the back door was open' and calling for him."

       'MYSTERY' MAN

It comes as locals claimed a mystery man had been spotted near the river in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One resident said: “I know that one of the neighbours saw a man near to the river at quarter to five in the morning.

“That was before the police turned up. She doesn’t know who it was.”

Another said: “I heard someone living around here saw a man by the river at around 4.45am on Saturday. It’s a mystery. What would you be doing by the river at that time of the morning?

“It is sickening to think that such a young life has been taken from our community.”

Locals said Angharad, who gave birth to a baby boy in February last year, and Jay had been together for around three years.

They got engaged in May and were planning to get married next year - with Logan "beyond excited" about being a page boy.

       'REALLY HAPPY BOY'

The family had recently returned from a trip to Blackpool but had to quarantine when they returned for two weeks after catching Covid.

Their last day of self-isolation was Saturday - when the youngster was found dead.

Tributes have now flooded in for Logan from his heartbroken classmates.

Parents of his reception class have broken the news of Logan "going to see the angels in heaven".

One mum took her five-year-old daughter to the spot - with the little girl saying Logan was "good at playing hide and seek".

She said the children were all due to start at the nearby Tondu Primary School together in September.

The mum added: "She knows he loved hide and seek, Spiderman and his favourite colour was blue.

"He just seemed really happy and a good boy. He was in my daughter's class for two years I think and they would be going up to big school in September."

       'GOOD PARENTS'

Another mum said: "He just seemed really happy and a good boy. He was in my daughter's class for two years I think and they would be going up to big school in September."

Logan was discovered in the water on Saturday morning and rushed to hospital, where it was confirmed he had died.

A family friend said Angharad collapsed soon after arriving at hospital when doctors told her Logan could not be saved.

Rhiannon Hales, 26, said: "They are good parents who love their children and bring them up well.

“My little girl is also five and she loved Logan, they were like little boyfriend and girlfriend together.

“I’m shocked and just devastated by what’s happened. He called me Auntie Rhi, but Logan was like my own little boy.

“He was such a happy kid, always said please and thank you.

“He loved colouring and did all the coronavirus posters in the front window of their flat.”

Police have widened the search area as part of the murder probe into Logan's death.

Specialist officers were seen scouring the bank of the river as they hunted for clues.
