       A murder investigation has been launched after the death of a patient in her 60s. A spokesperson for the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust said it would assist the police investigation into the unexplained death.

       Devon and Cornwall Police was called to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro on Wednesday at around 4:45pm.

       Officers were called to the scene after a woman in her 60s was pronounced dead.

       Police said the woman's death was being treated as suspicious and they had arrested a man in his 30s at a property in Par who remained in custody.

       According to reports, the man and woman were known to each other and a cordon remains in place.

       A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at around 4.45pm on Wednesday 19 July to Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske, following the death of a patient in her 60s. Enquiries are ongoing to locate and inform her next of kin.

       "Following initial enquiries, the cause of death is currently being treated as suspicious. A man in his 30s from the Par area has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody at this time.

       "The deceased and the suspect are believed to be known to each other. A cordon remains in place at a property in Par in connection to this matter."

       Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust said it is assisting police with the investigation into the "unexplained death".

       In a statement, the NHS Trust said: "We can confirm we are assisting Devon and Cornwall Police in their investigation into the unexpected death of a patient at the Royal Cornwall Hospital."

       The Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust was first opened in 1968. Formerly known as the Treliske Hospital, it initially included 180 beds spread across six wards.

       The hospital was expanded in 1998 when The Trelawny Wing was opened. After the wing was opened, the Trust became the main district hospital for Cornwall. The opening of the wing meant Cornwall had facilities equal to that of other areas in the country.
