PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry must thoroughly investigate the latest “period spot check” allegations involving a school in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, in order to prevent another repeat in future, said MCA central committee member Lau Chin Kok.

He noted that the latest incident was the second one that took place this year.

“The last known incident which happened at the beginning of the year received widespread scrutiny from all walks of life.

“Why are ‘period spot checks’ still recurring?” questioned Lau.

“Acting speedily and sternly on this matter will restore public and student trust in the ministry and more importantly, prevent the incident from spreading and damaging the Education Ministry’s reputation,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that the staff members who were involved in the case must be firmly dealt with by the ministry.

The issue flared up in April when some students took to social media to say period spot checks were happening in schools during Ramadan.

Lau also commended Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin for immediately meeting the students at the Setapak school right after arriving in KLIA from Kuching, Sarawak several days ago.

He stressed that no one at learning institutions had the authority to conduct period spot checks as they “infringe upon a student’s privacy”.

“Students must be safeguarded at all costs while parents will be assured that their children are learning in a safe environment.”

If the issue does not get the attention it warrants, Lau feared that more male personnel in positions of authority at schools would abuse their powers.

“By then, it will be too late if such incidents escalate to graver matters like outrage of modesty or sexual assault,” he added.

A recent tweet by an officer of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia said that about 30 female students were given cotton buds and asked to prove that they were menstruating on Oct 18.

In April, Radzi announced that his ministry would set up a new committee to look into the claims of period spot checks.
