State to partner with Red Cross, local agencies to provide tornado relief information in DuPage County

In an effort to help DuPage County residents adversely affected by Sunday’s tornado, Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday announced a partnership between the state and community relief organizations including the American Red Cross to create the multiagency resource center.

According to a news release, the center is “an all-encompassing hub for residents to access disaster related relief services and information.”

The resource center will be open at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, 7200 Janes Ave. in Woodridge, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The Ready Illinois website will serve as an online counterpart for those unable to attend in person. Those in need of further assistance are encouraged to contact the American Red Cross or their local emergency management office.

“By partnering with community relief organizations to consolidate access to all available support services, we’re ensuring the road to recovery is as smooth and streamlined as possible,” Pritzker said in a statement.

Residents in the southwest suburbs are trying to recover after an EF-3 storm with winds surpassing 135 mph damaged more than 230 homes, caused at least 11 injuries, and one fatality. Businesses have been damaged and multiple families have been displaced.

“As the debris is cleared away and we size up the damage, it’s essential we provide every possible resource to our communities affected by the storm,” DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin said.

There will also be a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Woodridge site. The Pfizer vaccine is available to people 12 years or older while the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available for those 18 and older. No appointment is necessary.
