A man traveling on the Red Line early Monday witnessed two strangers arguing and was stabbed by one of the men as he tried to walk around them on the platform at the Belmont “L” station once the train stopped, Chicago police said.
Police were called to the station at 945 W. Belmont Ave. about 12:20 a.m. to investigate the stabbing, according to a police media notification. They learned a 27-year-old man had been on a train when he noticed two males arguing. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the people arguing were adults or juveniles.
“The victim and the unidentified male who was yelling inside the train ... both exited onto the CTA Belmont platform,” the police statement said.
As the 27-year-old tried to pass the other man, the 27-year-old, “raised his hands” and the other man pulled out a knife and stabbed the man in the hand, police said.
Officials said the 27-year-old was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
The man with the knife took off running, but a description of him was shared with other patrol units, police said. He was “stopped nearby” and arrested after someone positively identified him and a knife was recovered nearby, according to authorities.
Charges were pending.
