The July 4 weekend starts Friday with dangerous swimming conditions at Lake Michigan beaches and cool weather, followed by a clear but hot few days, according to forecasters.

       Along southern Lake Michigan beaches and nearshore waters, the weather service expects dangerous conditions for swimming and boating into Friday night, with waves of 3 to 6 feet at shore and life-threatening currents. Residents are advised to stay out of the water and avoid piers, breakwaters and lakeshore trails.

       Strong winds up to 20 mph will cause high waves and strong currents along the Lake Michigan shore from near Milwaukee around the lake to southern Michigan, making swimming hazardous.

       After temperatures only inching into the 70s on Friday, the weather is expected to heat up starting Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The holiday weekend is expected to be dry, but will grow warmer and more humid by Independence Day.

       “If you have extended outdoor activities this weekend, plan now for ways to stay cool,” the weather service said.

       Sunday through Tuesday will see a limited excessive heat risk, and Tuesday and Wednesday will see a limited excessive thunderstorm risk, the weather service warned.

       “Temperatures will warm into the lower 90s in many spots on Independence Day and again on Monday, with heat index values in the mid-90s both afternoons,” the weather service said.
