IPOH: Tremors caused by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in western Sumatra on Friday (Feb 25) morning were felt in several parts of Perak.
A check found that the tremors were felt in Taiping and Teluk Intan.
Taiping Municipal Council public relations officer Hafizzuddin Azhar, 36, (pic) said he was at home when it occurred at about 9.50am.
"I was observing self-quarantine at home.
"It just happened for a few seconds. I knew right away that an earthquake must have happened somewhere," he said when contacted.
"I then got a message from my colleagues at the municipal council that it was also felt in the building and everyone was required to evacuate," he added.
According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake was said to have occurred at about 8.39am local time (9.39am in Malaysia) on Friday.
The epicentre of the quake is 17km south-east of Palaman in Sumatra.
An alert on the earthquake was also issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department in a tweet at 10.12am (Malaysian time).
In Teluk Intan, boutique owner Nur Shahira Shaari, 27, said tremors were felt at about 9.40am.
"I was wrapping an item to be sent out to a customer when I suddenly felt woozy.
"It was very brief and I thought I was having a dizzy spell before everything went back to normal," she said.
"A short while later, I saw some posts on social media that an earthquake had occurred in Indonesia," she added.
A spokesman for the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said it only received one call about the tremor, from the Taiping Inland Revenue Board.
"There was no damage or victims involved and we will be monitoring the situation closely," he said.
