Net migration has halved to 431,000 after a crackdown on foreign students and social care workers, new figures have revealed.
The Office for National Statistics confirmed the sharp fall as calls intensified for ministers to go further.

Net migration fell from 860,000 in the year to December 2023.
Former Home Secretary James Cleverly said: "This drop is because of the visa rule changes that I put in place.
"Labour will try to claim credit for these figures but they criticised me at the time, and have failed to fully implement the changes."

But Reform UK leader Nigel Farage blasted: “Net migration of over 400,000 for Labour’s first year of government. It may not be as high as the great Tory betrayal but it is still disastrous.
“Only Reform UK will freeze net immigration at zero.”

But another Tory Home Secretary issues a stark warning
Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman declared a million fewer people would have moved to the UK had changes been enacted sooner.
Mrs Braverman said: "This is thanks to the plan of measures that I pushed for as Home Secretary.
"Sadly I was blocked from delivering them early on in my tenure and it was over a year later until they were introduced.
"If we had introduced my measures even a year earlier, ie in 2022, over 1,000,000 people would not have come into the country and net migration would be even lower today.
"Much more needs to be done. This government must go further to fix the immigration crisis."

The row over who should take the credit continues
Former Home Secretary James Cleverly declared: "As Home Secretary I made significant changes to bring net migration down. Today's figures show they worked - a near 50% drop. We need to go further, but Labour won't.
"My changes:
- Raised the skilled worker salary threshold to £38,700
- Banned care workers from bringing dependants
- Increased the minimum income for family visas
- Tightened rules on student dependants
"These were projected to reduce migration by approximately 300,000 annually. The results, a 400,000 reduction, prove it worked. But Labour's changes aren't projected to manage even half of that.
"Starmer talks a big game. But the British public expects action, not words. We learned that lesson the hard way. But I took action, and the effects of the changes I made are clear."

Ending use of asylum hotels 'seems a fair way off'
Mihnea Cuibus, researcher at the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, speculated that a "stubbornly high" backlog of asylum appeals is a challenge for Labour as it works to end the use of hotels.
He said: "Labour's pledge to end hotel accommodation for asylum seekers has been a tough nut for them to crack.
"The government is now making more asylum decisions, but the backlog of asylum appeals remains stubbornly high.
This means that many asylum seekers are still in government accommodation, so ending the use of asylum hotels still seems a fair way off."

Asylum hotels have fallen... slightly
More than 32,000 migrants are currently living in taxpayer-funded hotel rooms, Home Office figures show.
The figure of 32,345 is down 15% from the end of December, when the total was 38,079, and 6% lower than the 34,530 at the same point a year earlier.
London was the area of the UK with the highest number of asylum seekers in hotels while overall Afghan and Iranian were the most common nationalities to be housed in this kind of accommodation.

Migrant allowed to say in UK due to 'wicked stepmother'
A migrant from Guinea has been allowed to remain in the UK because he will be punished by a wicked stepmother if he were to return home.
An immigration trbunal heard that the man was "physically abused" by his father's first wife, and secretly saved up money to flee the UK with the help of a family friend.

Yvette Cooper says she will go further
Yvette Cooper has said today's drop in net migration is a positive start, but she is determined to go further.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “The 300,000 drop in net migration since the election is important and welcome after the figures quadrupled to nearly a million in the last Parliament."
“Our Immigration White Paper sets out radical reforms to further reduce net migration.
“These figures show a big increase in returns of failed asylum seekers and foreign national offenders, record levels of illegal working penalties, and the asylum backlog and hotel use coming down.
“We are going even further by introducing new counter terrorism style powers to boost our border security and smash the people smuggling gangs responsible for their vile trade."

Migration figures still show extent of visa failures
Today's migration figures may at a glance appear positive for a beleaguered Labour Government.
However taking a closer look at the data reveals Britain's migrant situation is still in crisis.
It reveals that more dependants arrived on non-EU work visas last year than actual workers.
In addition, 100,000 EU migrants left the UK, so the fall in non-EU migrants is less stark than it first appears.

Labour's plans to curb migration announced earlier this month
The Prime Minister, who said the country risks becoming an “island of strangers” without better integration, said he wanted net migration to have fallen “significantly” by the next general election – but refused to set a target number.
Sir Keir’s plan includes reforming work and study visas and requiring a higher level of English across all immigration routes, and is expected to reduce the number of people coming to the UK by up to 100,000 per year.
Sir Keir’s reference to strangers faced criticism – including from Labour backbenchers – as it was said by some to have echoes of Enoch Powell’s infamous “rivers of blood” speech.
But Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended the Prime Minister, insisting the tone of his plan was “completely different” from the 1968 anti-immigration speech.

Dicing into the net migration numbers
The fall in net migration has been driven by a drop in the number of people coming to the UK to work and study, the ONS said.
There was a 49% decrease in 2024 in the number of non-EU+ nationals arriving in the UK as the main applicant on a work visa, along with a 35% fall in those coming as work dependants.
The number of non-EU+ nationals arriving as main applicants on a study visa dropped by 17%, while there was a much larger fall of 86% in study dependants.
The drop is likely to reflect changes in migration rules introduced in early 2024 by the previous Conservative government, which included restricting the ability of most international students to bring family members.
Non-EU+ nationals refers to people who are not from the European Union or from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Cleverly: Drop is because of my visa rule changes
James Cleverly reacting to the net migration figures released this morning.
When Rishi Sunak was Prime Minister and Mr Cleverly was Home Secretary, they raised the salary requirements for people wanting to work in the UK and made it harder to bring dependants.
Since then, these figures show the number of study dependants has dropped by 86%, and work dependants by 35%

Jenrick: Chagos is 'bad deal' after signing halted
Senior Tory Robert Jenrick said the Chagos deal is a “bad deal” after a court injunction blocked it from being signed.
The shadow justice secretary told Sky News: “It’s a sell-out for British interests.
“You’re seeing British sovereign territory being given away to an ally of China, and billions of pounds of British taxpayers’ money being spent for the privilege.
“This was always a bad deal.
“Keir Starmer did it because of his view of international law, where he wanted to put a non-binding judgment by a foreign court above the interests, the core security interests of the British people.
“And so if this group can force the Government to think twice, then all power to them.”
Asked if he thought it was right for a High Court judge to get involved, Mr Jenrick said: “Well, I don’t know the arguments that have been presented to the court, so we’ll see later today.”

A hearing is expected to take place at 10.30am.

Labour ramping up migration policies as Reform UK risk grows
For many years, the level of immigration – people coming to the UK – has been higher than the level of emigration – people leaving – meaning more people are coming to settle in the UK than are leaving to settle in another country.
The Government’s promise to “take back control of our borders” comes as Labour battles a surge in support for Reform UK, which won a by-election and council seats across England earlier this month, with policies including a “freeze” on immigration.

Fresh figures come soon after Government migration reforms announced
The latest figures will come less than a fortnight after Sir Keir Starmer said high net migration had caused “incalculable” damage to British society, as he set out a series of measures aimed at reducing further the number of people moving long term to the UK.
Sir Keir’s plan includes reforming work and study visas and requiring a higher level of English across all immigration routes, and is expected to reduce the number of people coming to the UK by up to 100,000 per year.

Net migration data due after Starmer’s warning on ‘island of strangers’
New estimates for the level of net migration to the UK – the difference between the number of people settling in the country long term and the number of people leaving – will be published on Thursday.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) will give its first estimate of net migration for the 12 months to December 2024, along with updated figures for the years to June 2024 and to December 2023.
The most recent estimates, published by the ONS in November, put net migration for the year to June 2024 at a provisional total of 728,000, down from a record 906,000 in the previous 12 months.
The Prime Minister, who said the country risks becoming an “island of strangers” without better integration, said he wanted net migration to have fallen “significantly” by the next general election – but refused to set a target number.
