Around 500 people had to be evacuated by staff after smoke came from a defective train. Victoria Station and Green Park are currently closed after the blaze. The Victoria Line is also partly suspended between Brixton and Warren Street due to the fire.

       In a statement provided to Express.co.uk, Transport for London (TfL) said there was smoke coming from a defective train which caused the alert.

       A TfL spokesperson said: “We apologise to customers using the Victoria line for the disruption they’ve experienced today.

       “Victoria Tube station was closed due to smoke coming from a defective train.

       “Our engineers have worked on moving the train so that normal service could resume and we are working on restoring a good service as quickly as possible.”

       London Fire Brigade reported a fire occurred in a battery compartment under a train at platform three heading northbound.

       The fire bridge were called to the platform at 11.40am, with the blaze under control by 1.05pm.

       The rest of the Victoria line is experiencing severe delays as a result of the blaze.

       In a statement provided to MyLondon, London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters were called to reports of smoke issuing from a train at Victoria Underground Station.

       “There was a fire in a battery compartment under a train at platform level on the Northbound Victoria Line at platform three.

       “Around 500 people were evacuated from the station by station staff. There were no reports of any injuries.

       “The Brigade was called at 1140 and the fire was under control by 1305.

       “Three fire engines from Fulham, Chelsea and Dowgate fire stations were at the scene.”

       On the TfL website, notices have warned those travelling of “severe delays”.

       It said: “Victoria Line: No service between Brixton and Warren Street and SEVERE DELAYS on the rest of the line due to a fire alert at Victoria.

       "Tickets are being accepted on London Buses, London Overground, Southeastern, South Western Railway, Great Northern and Greater Anglia."

       LBC collected responses from social media from witnesses to the fire.

       One user posted at 12:38pm: “Green Park just got evacuated. Smoke coming from Victoria line tunnels.

       “Everyone is fine btw.”

       Another user said, after joking the Victoria line is “painfully hot”: “I say that and there was literally a fire at Victoria Station.”
