TOKYO -- The Japanese capital reported another 4,566 coronavirus infections on Aug. 7, the fourth straight day for Tokyo to see over 4,000 new cases.
Tokyo registered a record high of 5,042 cases on Aug. 5. The capital remains under a fourth COVID-19 state of emergency as it hosts the Olympic Games.
Tokyo is battling a fifth wave of coronavirus cases. It recorded a total of 44,034 infections in the month of July, or an average of 1,420.5 cases per day, jumping more than threefold from June's daily average of 432.6.
By Aug. 6, a total of 2,306 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 245,219 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 6, there were 3,383 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 141 with severe symptoms.
