TOKYO -- The Japanese capital reported another 2,884 coronavirus infections on Aug. 9, the 14th straight day for Tokyo to see over 2,000 new cases.
The 2,884 new cases marked the highest figure for a Monday to date. Reported case numbers typically dip on Mondays due to low testing figures over the weekend, especially on Sundays.
Tokyo registered a record high of 5,042 cases on Aug. 5. The capital remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when it registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 8, a total of 2,311 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 252,169 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 8, there were 3,517 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 151 with severe symptoms.
