PETALING JAYA: For the third day in a row, the daily number of new Covid-19 cases has hovered around the 5,800 mark.
Yesterday, a total of 5,803 new cases were recorded. It was also the fourth consecutive day that cases had remained above 5,000.
However, there was a dip in the number of new clusters, with 14 detected over the past 24 hours compared to 21 clusters a day earlier.
The number of active clusters now stands at 868.
Outbreaks at the workplace continue to dominate, making up nine of the 14 clusters.
“Two other clusters were from detention centres – one in Gombak, Selangor, and the other in Tawau, Sabah,” said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement yesterday.
Another two clusters were from within the community while one more was detected among a high-risk group in Perak.
Yesterday’s total of 81 deaths also made it the fourth day in a row that the number of deaths were over 80.
“The youngest fatality was a 26-year-old male foreigner with obesity issues,” said Dr Noor Hisham.The oldest fatality was a 97-year-old Malaysian woman in Terengganu.Selangor recorded the bulk of the deaths with 30 fatalities, followed by 14 from Kuala Lumpur, 12 from Johor, nine from Negri Sembilan and five from Sarawak.
“Pahang and Melaka each recorded three deaths, while two fatalities are from Labuan. Penang, Kedah and Terengganu each had one death,” said Dr Noor Hisham.
The number of new cases yesterday also surpassed the 5,193 recoveries recorded. A total of 866 patients are in intensive care, with 435 requiring ventilator support.
