TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government recorded another 317 new coronavirus infections in Japan's capital on June 28.

The new cases came after the Japanese capital recorded 386 infections on June 27. Reported case numbers typically dip on Mondays due to low testing figures over the weekend, especially on Sundays. Tokyo is under quasi-emergency measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.

In the first week of June, Tokyo recorded an average of 422.9 new infections per day, before the figure declined to 380.4 in the second week, and rose slightly to 391.9 in the third. The figures were down from the daily average of 705.8 in May.

Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new virus cases in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.

By June 27, a total of 2,223 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo.

To date, Tokyo has recorded 172,744 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of June 27, there were 1,449 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 37 with severe symptoms.
