Voters without photo ID can't vote (Image: Getty)
Brits are off to the ballot boxes today with the General Election polling stations open from 7am until 10pm.
Contrary to what many people think, you don't need to bring your polling card to cast your ballot. However, there is one kind of document you will need in order to vote: photo ID.

Since May 2023, British voters have needed to bring with them a valid form of photo ID in order to put their X in a box.
The rules apply to general elections, local elections, referendums and by-elections, and votes for police and crime commissioners.
Although the rule has been in place for some time, several voters have taken to social media to complain that they're unable to vote because they don't have the correct identification.

Bemoaning the system, one angry voter wrote on X: "Aww so my bus pass photo ID has not come thru [sic]... have passport in my maiden name so looks like i cant [sic] vote tomorrow".
Another said: "I WANT TO VOTE i cant because i don't have id [sic]".
While a third wrote: "Because my mom made me go and get my passport renewed so now i don't have any photo ID so i cant vote [sic]".
The latest YouGov tracker data, conducted on June 27 to 28, found that 94 percent of people were now aware that photo ID is required in order to vote. That's up from 76 percent when YouGov first asked in April 2023.
