MELAKA: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has voiced appreciation for the commitment given by journalists and media practitioners in carrying out their duties.

In sending out National Journalists Day greetings, the King spoke about their dedication in conveying information and reporting the latest and most accurate news through television, newspapers, radio or online portals.

“His Majesty also expressed his appreciation to journalists and media practitioners for sacrificing their time, energy, thoughts and personal safety regardless of the weather condition and situation in carrying out the task of obtaining information,” read the posting on the Istana Negara Facebook page.

With the explosion of information on the Internet and social media, His Majesty advised journalists and media practitioners to always abide by the law and maintain journalism ethics as well as ensure integrity and accountability in every news report.

“Although the government respects the principles of press freedom, all quarters, especially journalists and media practitioners, must have a sense of accountability in publishing news reports.”

Describing them as unsung heroes, His Majesty said their role was crucial in the development of the country and in fostering unity among people of various races and religions.

“His Majesty prays that journalists and media practitioners will always be blessed with continuous success and be protected from any form of misfortune while carrying out their duties,” the posting read.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that journalists should continue upholding journalism ethics and provide constructive criticism to aid in nation-building.

Paying tribute to media practitioners in conjunction with the National Journalists Day celebration, Dr Wee said journalists are an important group of people who contribute to the country’s development.

“They work tirelessly. While others enjoy time off with their families, they are on the ground reporting accurate and credible news for the public.

“A journalist should also continue his or her role of providing constructive criticism to build the nation and its people.

“At the same time, journalism ethics should be upheld in their reporting without twisting the facts or giving inaccurate interpretation,” he added.

“I wish all journalists good health and success. Happy National Journalists Day,” said Dr Wee, who is also the MCA president, in a Facebook post yesterday.

The May 29 date was gazetted as National Journalists Day in conjunction with the publication of the first newspaper edition in Malaysia, which is Utusan Melayu, on May 29, 1939.

This year’s celebration is themed “People’s Voice, National Aspiration”.
