AN 18-YEAR-OLD boy has been found dead at one of England's leading independent schools.

       Emergency services were called to the ￡39,000-a-year Malvern College at around 10.20am on Monday, 10 January, following reports of a concern for safety.

       Upon arrival, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene on Woodshears Road and police say his death is not being treated as suspicious.

       A spokesman for the prestigious boarding school - which counts CS Lewis, Sir Chris Whitty and Jeremy Paxman among its alumni - said staff were "heartbroken".

       They said in a statement: "We can sadly confirm the death of one of our pupils at Malvern College over the weekend.

       "First and foremost, our thoughts and deepest condolences go to the pupil’s family.

       "This is the most heartbreaking news imaginable and we have put in place additional, professional support for our whole community at this incredibly difficult time.

       "Relevant authorities are involved in the matter and we are unable to comment further at this time."

       A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "Police were called to Woodshears Road in Malvern at around 10.20am on January 10 following a report of a concern for safety.

       "Upon arrival, sadly an 18-year-old male was found dead.

       "The death is not being treated as suspicious."

       The Worcestershire College, founded in 1865, claims to be one of England's leading independent schools which caters for 662 boys and girls aged 13 to 18 years.

       It was rated "outstanding" at its last inspection and fees are ￡39,000-a-year for full boarders, ￡32,400 for day boarders and ￡27,000 for day pupils.

       Famous ex-pupils include novelist C S Lewis, broadcaster Jeremy Paxman, Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty and the ITV sports presenter Mark Pougatch.
