The compromise would mean the ECJ would oversee EU law in Northern Ireland in almost all cases involving Single Market rules. Brexit Minister Lord Frost said for a non-EU country to be judged in the ECJ would be “highly unusual”, he is instead called for cases to be heard by an independent arbitration panel that follows the UK-EU trade agreement system. Without ECJ oversight, Northern Ireland would lose its privileged access to the Single Market, which is why the role over EU judges is a huge hurdle in the Brexit discussions for the province. Lord Frost and European Commission vice president Maros Sefcovic, are meeting in Brussels on Friday.
