PETALING JAYA: The Federal Constitution should be amended so that only a Malay Muslim is qualified to be Malaysia’s Prime Minister, says Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

Wan Ahmad then said that this could restore Malay support for the government.

“My proposal to Anwar is that this is the best time, with a two-thirds majority, to amend the Constitution so that only a Malay Muslim can be the Malaysian Prime Minister,” he said.

“Maybe through this, it could restore Malay support for the unity government, compared to wearing the capal (traditional sandals), singing, kissing the keris or speaking Bahasa,” added Wan Ahmad in a statement on Facebook on Thursday (Dec 14).

Wan Ahmad said DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang’s remarks that the Federal Constitution does not stop any non-Malay from being the prime minister has created unease among Malays who were the majority race in the country.

He claimed that Lim's statement had gone against the spirit of the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, which placed multiracial aspects based on respect to the social contract, the will of the Malay rulers and the “unwritten consensus” among others.

Lim had made the controversial comments on non-Malays becoming the prime minister during a meeting with Malaysian students in Manchester, United Kingdom, last month.
