California plans to sue Trump California leaders said yesterday that they would file a lawsuit against President Trump for deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles as part of a crackdown on immigration.
The lawsuit will argue that Trump’s order to the National Guard was illegal because he bypassed the governor of California, Gavin Newsom.
Los Angeles remained on edge after several days of clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators who took to the streets to protest raids at workplaces to search for undocumented migrants. About 150 people have been arrested since Friday, and defense officials said 500 Marines were “being mobilized” to help quell the protests.
We have live updates and photos of the protests.
Trump described the protesters as “insurrectionists” yesterday, using rhetoric that could help him invoke a law that would give him broad authority to use the military to deal with violent protests in California and possibly elsewhere. There were signs that tensions were spreading, as protests popped up in New York City, San Francisco and other places.
