Deadly Protests Grip Bangladesh
2024-07-19 00:00:00.0     纽约时报-亚洲新闻     原网页

For days, university students in Bangladesh have been locked in deadly clashes with the police and supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party, in which more than 100 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured.

Late Friday night, the government announced a nationwide curfew and ordered the military deployed after police and security officials had fired on protesters earlier in the day.

Students have been demonstrating against a quota system for government jobs, which they consider unfair. On Thursday, protesters set fire to at least two government buildings in Dhaka, the capital, including Bangladesh’s national television station. The government has severed communications, with mobile internet service cut and TV stations knocked off the air.
