A 38-year-old man was fatally struck on the head with an object during a fight New Year’s Day on the South Side in the Robert Taylor Homes neighborhood, Chicago police said.
Shortly after 4:30 a.m., the victim was involved in a physical altercation with a male suspect who struck him on the head with a blunt object before fleeing the scene in the 5000 block of South State Street.
Witnesses told police the victim fell to the ground and was unresponsive. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
The victim has not yet been identified.
No one is in custody, and Area One detectives were investigating.
