Moira and Raymond Hepplewhite were lucky they were in the living room on the other side of the house when the silver vehicle smashed into their property on Thursday night. Firefighters freed the female driver from the wreckage near Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Moira, 74, said: "We were both sitting in the lounge and it's on the back of the bungalow. We knew nothing until this almighty noise, a bang, and then there were bricks flying and the wall came in.

"Luckily we were on the other side so we're both alright. It came in the bedroom and through to the bathroom. We were very lucky.

"The computer is where the car came through and my husband is always on the computer.

"We're lucky we're both safe, it could have been both of us with the state of the house. If I'd been in the bathroom or my husband had been at the computer, it would have been much worse."

Moira and her 76-year-old husband now face an anxious wait, with the vehicle unable to be removed until the house is propped up due to the structural damage.

Fortunately, they have been able to stay with relatives for the time being, with their gas, electricity and water supply now cut off.

But it could be several weeks before they're allowed to return to the property, which is in the rural outskirts of Gateshead.

Moira added: "It was unbelievable. I thought something had hit the roof. I can't think straight.

"We're staying with family, but our neighbours have all said if we needed anything they would put us up. It could be eight to 12 weeks before we can go back.

"We're going to put barriers in the garden set in concrete, so if anything does happen again it will not come near the bungalow.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 6pm last night (Thursday), police received a report that a car had crashed into a house on Forge Close, Gateshead.

"Emergency services attended to free the woman from her car. No residents were injured and officers arranged for structural assessments to be carried out on the property.”
