Our soldiers will be put on standby to help support a “humanitarian response” if Russia pushes ahead with plans for a bloody war in Ukraine.
Mr Johnson goes to Brussels today for Nato talks before heading for Poland to meet with British soldiers already on the front line in Europe.
French President Macron caused uproar earlier this week by cosying up to Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
But Mr Johnson last night clarified: “The UK remains unwavering in our commitment to European security.
“What we need to see is real diplomacy, not coercive diplomacy. As an alliance, we must draw lines in the snow and be clear there are principles upon which we will not compromise.
“That includes the security of every Nato ally and the right of every European democracy to aspire to Nato membership.”

But he will open the door to talks over troop deployments, military exercises and arms controls on Russia’s frontier — if Mr Putin pulls back his 130,000 force on Ukraine’s borders.
Meanwhile, Liz Truss landed in Moscow last night for the first high-level talks with Russia in four years.
The Foreign Secretary will urge them to step back from the brink and abandon the aggressive march to war.
Defence chiefs have seen “no signs” of any Russian de-escalation.
The longer the mass of troops are there, the more they fear they will get used.
