TOKYO -- The coronavirus pandemic has prompted Japan's senior population to spend more time in front of the TV, while the younger set is hooked more on YouTube, a survey released on Aug. 26 by NTT Docomo Inc.'s Mobile Society Research Institute has shown.

According to the survey asking what activities people had more opportunities to do following the onset of the pandemic, roughly 60-70% of respondents in their 60s and 70s cited "viewing of terrestrial TV programs," while some 70% of those aged between 15 and 29 cited "viewing and posting on YouTube." Both results applied to men and women alike.

The research was aimed at finding the shift in people's activities pre- and post-pandemic. The online questionnaire targeted people aged between 15 and 79 across Japan in February, of whom 6,240 provided valid response.

Among the activities that people had more chances to do following the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, for which multiple answers were allowed, "viewing of terrestrial TV programs" accounted for about 60%, while "YouTube viewing and posting" comprised roughly 50%.

By gender and age, 71.3% of women in their 60s said they had more time to watch TV, followed by men in their 70s at 70.3% and women in the same age bracket at 70.2%. The figure dropped to 40.2% among men in their teens.

Meanwhile, 74.5% of teenage girls said they viewed and posted more on YouTube, followed by teen boys at 71.9% and men in their 20s at 70.3%.
