MELAKA: The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance party (Muda) is planning to contest in the upcoming Melaka state election, says its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

He said Muda’s candidates would be part of the Opposition bloc.

However, he said Muda was still in negotiations when asked about the number of state seats the party was eyeing.

"We decided to contest to reform the political landscape in Melaka.

"We must understand why the state election was warranted just because of a power grab among Umno leaders in the state.

"At the end of the day, the state election is being held during a pandemic at a cost of RM46mil," he said on Wednesday (Oct 27).

Syed Saddiq said Muda was still not a registered political party and would work with the Opposition in fielding its candidates.

Nominations had been set for Nov 8 while polling was on Nov 20.

The polls were triggered following the dissolution of the Melaka state assembly after Sungai Udang assemblyman Datuk Seri Idris Haron and three others withdrew support for then chief minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
