KOTA KINABALU: Most Sabahans have opted to keep their face masks on despite the government easing requirements from Sunday (May 1).

A check by The Star at the Gaya Street market here found that most locals were still walking around with masks on although a few, especially Western tourists, happily strolled around the popular Sunday street fair without masks.

Souvenir seller Sharifah Mohd said although the country was shifting towards the endemic phase of Covid-19, she still believed it was wise to stay protected.

“To be honest I’m still a bit worried (of catching Covid-19) so that’s why I’m keeping my mask on,” said the 33-year-old.

“We can’t see the virus and we don’t know who we will be meeting or talking to so it’s better to be safe.”

Salleh Mantap said he would only take off his mask in public if no one was nearby.

“Of course, I’m still concerned for my safety. Besides, we have been wearing masks for the past two years so it will take time to get used to not putting them on again,” said the e-hailing driver.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had said last week wearing face masks was still compulsory when indoors and while using public transport.

Khairy, however, said that while face masks were no longer mandatory in outdoor spaces, the practice was highly encouraged as it could reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Malaysia made wearing face masks mandatory from Aug 1, 2020 under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).

Radio presenter Amy Dangin said she had no qualms about being in crowded outdoor spaces without a mask as she was confident the disease was treatable.

Naturopathic physician Devi K said it would have been better if the government just gave the people the freedom to choose whether or not to use face masks indoors or outdoors.

“It’s confusing now. But it’s understandable that when people are sick, it’s good to put on masks in enclosed spaces.

“However, it’s not healthy for people to use face masks for the long term because of the lack of oxygen and accumulation of carbon dioxide (among others),” she said.

Maggie Tan said she was relieved that the government finally loosened the SOPs on face masks. “After two years of wearing them, I feel I can breathe again.”
