University of Reading Malaysia and Labyrinth Psychological Centre established their partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the extension of psychological research and other related aspects.

The MoU, signed by University of Reading Malaysia provost and chief executive officer Prof Wing Lam and Labyrinth Psychological Centre founder Tan Zong Yan marks a shared commitment to advancing academic research, fostering professional development, and enhancing community wellbeing – particularly in Johor.

The collaboration will facilitate engagement in research projects, pooling their expertise in psychological knowledge and practice to address contemporary challenges in mental health.

There will be opportunities for joint workshops or training sessions to support the continuous professional development of academics and psychologists in both institutions.

Both institutions pledge to undertake community outreach programmes to raise awareness about the field of psychology, overcome stigma of mental health conditions, and ensure psychological services are more accessible for underserved populations.

University of Reading Malaysia psychology head Associate Prof Dr Chung Kai Li expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Our students are always keen to pursue opportunities to be exposed to a clinical setting.

“Through this MoU, we will embark on a journey of collaboration in research, teaching, and placement opportunities.”

       SHAPING THE FUTURE AT MMU

The University of Reading Malaysia and Labyrinth Psychological Centre look forward to a very successful partnership that will pave the way for advancements in psychological research and the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based psychological services.

The University of Reading Malaysia is a wholly owned international branch campus of the University of Reading, one of the UK’s leading universities with a distinguished global reputation for teaching and research. The School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences celebrated its centenary in 2021, making it one of the oldest psychology departments in the UK.

In the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject, the psychology programme was ranked in the top 200 worldwide.

Labyrinth Psychological Centre, founded in 2020, is one of the few centres in Johor Bahru that houses clinical psychologists who are registered under the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council, and one that provides a wide range of psychological services, from assessment to therapy, to both children and adults.

The centre also provides services to other areas of Johor - Batu Pahat and Kulai - on a locum basis.
