KUALA LUMPUR: The police's traffic summonses payment counters at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) have been closed indefinitely following overwhelming public response to the discounts up to 80% offered.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Comm Datuk Mat Kasim Karim said the payment counters were closed from 2pm on Friday (Dec 10).
"We closed the counters to avoid overcrowding at the venue.
"We also want to prevent any violation of the standard operating procedure and prevent the spread of Covid-19," he said when contacted.
Comm Mat Kasim said the counters at KLCC will not be reopened and advised the public to go to district and state police headquarters to pay their summonses.
"We have extended the operational hours for the counters there until 5pm.
"We hope the public can cooperate and settle their summonses at these locations," he said.
Earlier, a long queue was seen at KLCC, extending throughout the building.
Checks at around 10am on Friday (Dec 10) showed that lines for the summonses payments have extended past the entrance to the 100-Day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia exhibition.
Police officers can be seen outside advising those with summonses to go to the nearest police headquarters.
Inside, Rela personnel and police personnel told the crowd to ensure physical distancing.
However, the hall remains crowded with many still waiting since 9.30am.
