TOKYO -- Police across Japan received a total of 7,846,738 emergency calls between January and November 2021, the second lowest since comparable data began being collected in 2011, the National Police Agency (NPA) announced on Jan. 10.
In Japan, the emergency number to reach police is 110, and the NPA announced the figure on Jan. 10 as the day is "110 emergency number day." The total was up 2.5% from the same period in 2020, when emergency calls declined drastically from previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the 7,846,738 calls, 1,516,082, or 19.3%, were for non-emergencies. These included complaints and requests, such as "The coronavirus measures are preventing me from seeing my wife in the hospital," "I want an officer to wake my son up on the phone," and "I'm drunk and I need a police car to take me home."
The agency requests that people dial the #9110 police consultation number for problems other than crimes committed or in progress, accidents and natural disasters. #9110 consultations cover stalking, domestic violence and malicious marketing strategies, among other non-emergency trouble.
