On October 10, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. the Valdai Discussion Club will host an expert discussion on the UN’s role in conflict resolution.

       Since its founding, the UN has been recognised as the chief arbiter in international conflicts, including the use of military force. The UN, in its activities, relies on international law, and its arsenal of instruments is very large, including peace-enforcement measures.

       Recently, more and more, often one can hear criticism of the UN and its main institutions, including demands to reform the UN Security Council - the main organ of the Organisation, which is entrusted with ensuring international security.

       Is the UN to be considered ineffective in ensuring international security? How has its effectiveness increased? What changes did the peacekeeping institution undergo in the past two decades? What role does the UN play in maintaining peace in the post-Soviet space? Participants in the expert discussion will answer these and other questions.
