Critical care nurse Joanne Kelly suffered a stab wound outside New Cross hospital in Wolverhampton, West Mids, on Tuesday.

It was claimed the 47-year-old was attacked after reportedly being challenged over a visiting ban at the hospital.

She was discharged from the hospital last night following treatment for minor injuries.

West Midlands Police today said that a man, 21, held on suspicion of wounding had been de-arrested following the woman's arrest.

She was being quizzed by officers in custody over events at the hospital.

Officers said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the crime.

A police spokesman said: "Our enquiries continue to establish exactly what happened and we are working closely with the hospital on this. At this time we’re not looking for anyone else in connection with the crime.

"A man arrested by officers at the scene yesterday has been de-arrested. We thank him for his co-operation and he is no longer part of our enquiries.

"The woman who was hurt in the incident was discharged from hospital yesterday evening following treatment for minor injuries."

Armed police swooped on the scene in the wake of the reported attack.

It was alleged she was outside the entrance to A&E trying to calm down an agitated visitor.

A limited visiting pilot scheme at the hospital was halted earlier this month because of a hike in Covid admissions.

Police refused to elaborate on the circumstances of the arrest.

The spokesman added: "We have nothing further to add and will not speculate on any aspect of the investigation.

"We're keeping an open mind about what happened and our investigation will establish the facts. It's important for everyone that we get this right so the investigation will take as long as necessary."

Yesterday relatives of Joanne said the nurse "doing OK" and in a "good condition in hospital".

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said on Facebook: "There has been a police incident at New Cross Hospital. Police were on site and we increased security presence. There was no disruption to services."

Witnesses say the nurse was attacked outside the entrance to A&E
